These searchlights were used for ship to ship and ship to shore communications (via Morse code) within a five mile range. They were carried by every ship in the US Navy. They were produced by several manufacturers by the thousand to a common Navy spec, including a special 1,000 watt T-20 lightbulb originally used for airstrip lighting.
