This is a clam shell type mount for a 2" solid (non-live) axle system, similar to those found on boat trailers except without the springs. ATV applied to the vertical flange surfaces seals the carrier to the vehicle sidewall, whereas RTV on the cylindrical surfaces seals the axle to the carrier. This makes a watertight assembly in which the axle can be adjusted side to side (in the clam shell) and fore and aft (oval mounting holes in the vehicle sidewalls) allowing some alignment freedom. I use these as rear axle carriers on tracked off road vehicles, both gasoline and electric hybrid.
