This is my entry for the NASA challenge Please take a look at my animations on youtube. ============================= DESCRIPTION OF THE ANIMATIONS ============================= EDIT: Please have a look at the "official" video url of this entry, it's a single animation of about 5 minutes, I keep the animation below too for reference: Here you can see the printing process from a distance, the process is almost finished, there are only a couple of patches (the black hexagonal spots) to complete. The 19 nozzles injection head is used. The two robotic arms are independent of each other and operate only on their respective side to minimize the risk of collision. A set of two cameras provide guidance for the printing head. A turning table might or might not be used. https://youtu.be/_QZx5n2KaYA Same as above but with a close up view. After the printing is complete the part is x-rayd by attaching the x-ray end effector to the same robotic arms. The following operation is final machining, a sphere mill is attached to machine the shield to spec. https://youtu.be/jDo8tCUHO0g Same animation from a different angle and a different rendering style (this took 5 minutes to render compared to 3 hours of the first two). https://youtu.be/xPCIPE3ayFs Printing process from the operator point of view https://youtu.be/iqwMbNM2ZgI Different rendering style. Acceptable results with a massive reduction in rendering time. https://youtu.be/dsIeRcO-B1k This is the 3d printing of one of the main structural components of the Orion capsule. The torch mounted on the robotic arm has a similar construction as of a MIG/MAG torch. The metal filament is continuously fed trough the axis of the torch and melted by the provided electric current. A very important aspect is the continuous blowing of inert gas on the spot being done to protect the melted material until it solidifies. After the material deposition process is completed the part is machined to the final shape trough an end mill attached to the robotic arms. https://youtu.be/Efcq-K5DZo4 In this animation it is shown the entire range of movement for both the gantry and the robotic arms. https://youtu.be/ZQZm01vl-YI
