There are a few air ratchet models here but none of them include the ratcheting drive mechanism so I drew one up. It's missing the pawls, etc, and nothing is to scale and wouldn't work but it's just used to illustrate the basic idea. Similar to a ratchet wrench, the air ratchet uses pawls to catch the teeth, holding the teeth in place. With the air ratchet, the rotating drive shaft drives a jog up back and forth (and up and down), causing the internal head to oscillate back and forth. Since the pawls only allow motion in one direction, the teeth get driven every full cycle. (basically)
