Alec Steele's B&S Massey 2cwt Tup · 模型 143897
While I was watching Alec Steele's (YouTube) series on him restoring his 1915 B&S Massey 2cwt power hammer, I decided that where possible, I would capture his drawings so that I can produce a 3D model as an educational design reference for steam power hammer tup designs. If you are unfamiliar with such terms, 'cwt' is hundredweight (British) and is equal to 50.8kg; so, a 2cwt is equal to 101.6kg. This is the nominal mass of the falling (tup) components which includes the piston, the piston rings, the connecting rod (shaft), and the ram (not included here). The nominal tup mass does not include dies, which can be changed by the operator and thus becomes an inconsistent variable – which is why tup mass excludes dies and keys and uses the permanent components of the machine. The piston and piston rings are per Alec’s drawings, with some additional features for smoother operating and reduced wear. As Alec’s actual B&S Massey used a threaded (custom Whitworth) joint interface for the piston and shaft – which is not a good idea, I have modified that feature for a heavy interference fit which will never come apart unless you have a significant amount of heat and a hydraulic ram. The shaft is just an approximation based upon some less than precise measurements that Alec mentioned throughout the series but seems to all check out. For the 2cwt mass, the shaft, piston, and three rings account for 40% of the total (tup) mass at 40.78kg. The piston rings here are as machined, not finished; if you wish to produce these you will need to separate them and set them. As I have not been active here for a long while – and a lot of my other models getting flagged and taken down (which I might re-upload) – this is just something simply for the people who are following my account and might want something interesting.
