Lighter and cheaper structural support for the Alstom Metropolis Metro trains. The design chosen for the new supports, are based on standard structural IPE140 S275JR steel profiles. The design rely on reusing the existing solebar and frame interface. Other profiles and materials has been considered, however – I have not been able to find any other designs that combines lighter weight, sufficient strength and lower cost, as good as the IPE140 S275JR. The cost savings comes mostly from the fact, that the amount of welding has been reduced by ¾. The original support beam design is said to weigh 282kg/set of five and cost $ 1,800.-, that makes each support weigh 56,4kg at a cost of $ 360.-. The new support has a weight of only 38,0kg and a cost of approx. $ 220.-, including solebars. That adds up to 190kg at cost of $ 1,250.-
