If you want to latch the segements with full mecahical system without any sensors or electronics that is activated on contact protrusion is a must in one face of the segment but since the challange has limited usage of protrusion, this design is the only way to beat the limitation. In this design the contact alignment is diagonal where the contact faces of each segement have diagonal stractures giving them more surface area of contact which be very useful to design locks, permanent protrusion starcture can be used without the protrusion going out of the edge or boundary of the segement and great for minimization of weight. There can be number of option for latching system but only one effective alignment for each option of latcting design.
