Here is my automatic horse feeder. It is made from 3D-printed parts, a section of construction PVC pipe with an 80 mm diameter 2mm thick, and plywood panels. It also uses KFL08 bearing blocks, an 8 mm shaft (the kind commonly used in 3D printers), a 12 V geared motor running at 5 to 10 RPM (a cheap model typically found on AliExpress), and an 8 mm shaft coupler. For installation, it is designed to operate through the wall of a field shelter or a stable. Drill an 85 mm diameter hole in the wall, mount the unit on the side where the horse cannot access it, and attach a feed trough on the other side, under the tube where the feed is dispensed. This system allows you to feed the horse at fixed times, in divided portions, with several days of autonomy. The principle is simple: when the geared motor is activated, the auger (worm screw) rotates and dispenses pelleted feed. It can be used with an automatic timer or with an Arduino / ESP32 if you want more advanced control. The hopper holds 25 liters of pellets. I use it with extruded concentrated pellets shaped like small cylinders, about 5 mm in diameter and roughly 15 mm long. There is a special shape on the screw so that the pellet does not get jammed against the edge of the inlet opening in the tube, in the kind of small triangular space that forms in the corner as the thread advances.
