It is a simple yet innovative design which reduces part count, print time, and leakage and contamination risks. With a 65mL liquid culture space and a 33mL gas space, it features a Venturi-effect outlet that increases CO₂ expulsion speed by 11%, preventing overpressurization. The design includes two specialized ports: a gas-permeable membrane outlet, used during operation to release CO₂ while preventing liquid loss, and a Luer-compatible injection/extraction port, used only when adding or removing nutrients, media, or microbes. Optimized for FDM/FFF 3D printing, BioPack-X follows DfAM principles, incorporating a flat base, 45-degree chamfers (which prevents print failure due to warping), and 60-degree overhangs to eliminate the need for support structures. It requires no post-processing and can be used directly from the print bed. Transparent PETG is the chosen material for its food safety, durability, sterilizability, and recyclability, making it fully compatible with the ISS Refabricator. By streamlining manufacturing and ensuring reliability, BioPack-X enhances space-based biomanufacturing, reducing mission mass while enabling efficient and sustainable nutrient production for long-duration missions.
