Bioreactor for Deep Space Food Production- J Rod · 模型 266250
The 3D-printable bioreactor is designed to be modular, scalable, recyclable, and reusable, while ensuring leak-proof performance and efficient gas exchange. It features a hexagonal cultivation chamber with interlocking mechanisms along its sides, allowing multiple units to be securely joined for stability in zero-gravity environments and for efficient storage. The chamber can be 3D-printed from PEEK, a durable, high-temperature-resistant, and food-safe material. The gas-permeable insert, made of ePTFE or FEP, facilitates oxygen and CO₂ exchange without leakage. The cultivation chamber cap is secured by a central screw, which evenly distributes pressure across the chamber to maintain structural integrity. Silicone rubber gaskets between the chamber and the lid create a leak-proof seal, which can be easily tightened or loosened for maintenance and sterilization. The lid includes both male and female Luer lock inlets, providing secure access to the main chamber for fluid introduction and extraction. The bioreactor includes a gas-permeable insert made of ePTFE or FEP, designed to facilitate efficient oxygen and CO₂ exchange without leakage. The insert has a diameter of 25 mm, with a pore size ranging between 0.2 µm and 1.0 µm. This pore size is ideal for preventing liquid escape while ensuring sufficient CO₂ diffusion, meeting the bioreactor's needs for gas exchange in a 100 mL culture. A second insert can be added to further enhance the gas exchange capacity if needed, allowing the system to be adapted for larger cultures or more demanding conditions. The bioreactor is designed for easy scalability, with caps and interlocking mechanisms that support various chamber sizes. These chambers can be recycled and reprinted as needed, making the system adaptable to changing demands. Its tool-free assembly and reusable components reduce reliance on Earth-based resupply, making it ideal for long-duration space missions. The design also meets NASA’s requirements for maintaining gas exchange in a microgravity environment, with the ePTFE or FEP membrane ensuring adequate CO₂ diffusion while maintaining leak-proof containment. The bioreactor's materials are sterilizable and resistant to microbial contamination, ensuring safe, repeated use in space.
