This entrance hole extension was designed to help improve the safety of cavity-nesting birds by increasing the distance between the entrance hole and the nesting cavity. The deeper tunnel makes it more difficult for predators such as raccoons, cats, squirrels, and larger birds to reach eggs or nestlings through the entrance. Unlike simple reinforcement plates, this design provides a full entrance tunnel while maintaining a clean, natural appearance. The mounting flange allows it to be securely attached with two screws and easily removed if desired. I designed this extension after observing local nesting birds and wanting a solution that offered additional protection without requiring the birdhouse itself to be rebuilt. Suitable Species This design is intended for small cavity-nesting birds when paired with the appropriate entrance hole diameter, including: Common Sparrow Eastern Bluebird Tree Swallow Black-capped Chickadee House Wren White-breasted Nuthatch Tufted Titmouse Carolina Chickadee (where native) Always match the entrance hole diameter to the species you are trying to attract. Installation Please install this extension only outside of the nesting season. Adding or modifying a birdhouse while it is occupied can cause adult birds to abandon the nest or become reluctant to return. The best time to install is during late autumn, winter, or very early spring before birds begin selecting nest sites. If a birdhouse is already occupied, wait until the young have successfully fledged and the nesting season has completely finished before making any modifications. Printing Print with the mounting flange on the build plate. PETG, ASA, or other weather-resistant materials are recommended for outdoor use. I printed my own from Carbon Fiber PETG with excellent results. No supports should be required. Included Files Fusion 360 source file (F3D) for customization. STL file ready for printing. Feel free to modify the design to suit different entrance hole sizes or birdhouse wall thicknesses.
