A Smerch system is a heavy, road-mobile multiple-tube launcher built to deliver concentrated long-range area fires. Mounted on an all-terrain vehicle chassis, it carries a bank of launch tubes, on-board loading equipment and a fire-control/navigation suite so it can quickly move into position, launch a volley of tube-fired projectiles and relocate. Designed for high-volume, area-saturation strikes, it accepts different types of payloads and can blanket large target zones rather than engage single points. Its combination of mobility, rapid salvo capability, and integrated aiming systems makes it suited for use wherever powerful, short-time concentrated barrages are required.
