British Navy depth sounding device · 模型 111488
Model of a mechanism used by the British Navy in the 19th century for taking depth soundings with a sample of the ocean floor. The plummet with attached sample cup is suspended on two counterpoised hooks. When the plummet reaches the ocean floor, the tension on the hooks is released. When the device is drawn back up to the ship, it is brought up by the wire attached to the sample cup, so that a "scooping" motion is performed. The user can then determine whether the ship is over sand or rock based on the sample collected, as well as determining the distance to the ocean floor. Rope and cord are modeled in yellow. Based on a drawing entitled "British Navy Sounding Apparatus" from the ClipArt ETC collection of FCIT. This model is part of a capstone project for the Introduction to SolidWorks class in Irvine Valley College's Design, Model-Making, and Prototyping program.
