My name is Dylan. I am 14 years old and I go to Queen Elizabeth’s School in London, UK. Have you ever struggled to keep your USB cables organised? Or have they ever fallen off the table without you wanting them too? If so, this cable holder is the solution. After brainstorming concept ideas to hold the USB cables in place, I narrowed it down to a final design. I sketched it out numerous times until I had got exactly what I wanted. I took lots of measurements of USB cables to find dimensions, for example the average width, and from this chose to make the design hold up to 5 cables at once. I then modelled it on Autodesk Fusion 360, and my renders have been uploaded. The cable holder consists of two parts. Each has 5 semi-circles that fit together (with the other half of the model) to form 5 circles, through which the cables sit. Simply put the half with the holes in it on the surface, slide the cables in and put the other half on top. It could not be easier! The two halves lock together with a simple mechanism so it is easy to 3D print. Four protrusions on the top half fit into four holes on the bottom half, thus keeping the whole model in place. The ends of the cables are larger than the holes and so do not fall out. The model is designed for FDM 3D printing. For this the structure had to be robust with few overhangs with angles less than 45 degrees. I also made it specifically so that no support is required. This minimises the plastic used. Due to the slight inaccuracies of FDM 3D printers, the hole sizes could not be identical to the diameter of the protrusions in the other half of model, so the holes are very slightly bigger. It is printed in ABS because it is tough, durable and strong. However, some PLA filaments if left in intense direct sunlight can start to deform. By printing in ABS, the model will keep its shape. I then tested this model by printing it on an Up Mini 2. I had white ABS filament at the time, however the bright green in the original model would stand out and appeal to the user. The print was high quality and functioned as expected, and I now use it all the time. Overall, this cable holder proves to be a simple yet effective design to hold USB cables in place. By going through a design process and printing the model, I have created a high quality and useful product.
