My concept for the challenge was inspired by the first law of thermodynamics, and the conservation of energy. I think this inspiration is further reflected by the use of the LED bulb, which is a different kind of conservation of energy. Nonetheless, the design represents the cycle of energy from source to end use, all energy takes a different path, but it is ultimately returned to the environment to continue the cycle. The shade design can be printed as one piece with a Maker Bot, and can be used as a shade on a desktop lamp or hanging lamp as shown. Material usage was reduced (thinner walls may be possible), and the idea of no support material was incorporated into the design. The coil features were sized to be sufficiently strong during the printing to not require support material. The design only includes the shade, there are not provisions for a light socket as it was not clear what exact model would be used. A simple hole sized for a E27 socket is incorporated into the shade. There are also no provisions for a hanging mechanism or desktop lamp frame.
