This design was conceived as a self-contained sub-assembly with parts that are easily manufactured and/or obtained from 3rd party sources. Our sub-assembly was designed around the features of a breathing bag so that we can use its known specifications and qualities to provide the patient with the necessary breathing aid. For instance, the breathing bag will provide the required volume control and relief valve system. A pneumatic actuator was chosen as the driving component to compress the breathing bag. When the breathing bag is compressed at the appropriate rate, it will supply the patient with the appropriate tidal volume. The overall structure of the assembly also leaves plenty of room at the top for other needed components that could be added, such as a compressor, battery pack, and other electronic controls.
