This part is meant to attach a common laser pointer to the protractor head of a combination square, enabling approximate measurement of angles. There's a holder and a bracket for keeping a cylindrical laser pointer in place. Two 1/2" 4-40 screws and small-pattern 4-40 nuts (McMaster part no. 90730A005) secure the bracket to the holder body. I am using a PEC combination square, which is of fairly standard construction, though no guarantees for other brands. The main source of error here is the alignment of the laser beam with the center of rotation of the protractor. That is, the line of the laser beam must be coplanar with the axis of rotation of the protractor.
