Description of Gemstone Design Using SOLIDWORKS Replica of the Cullinan II gemstone In my recent project, I undertook the design of a replica of the Cullinan II gemstone, utilizing SOLIDWORKS to achieve precise geometric specifications. This project involved: - Complex Faceting: The model features 66 facets and 28 girdles, designed with a 2-fold mirror-image symmetry. This level of detail requires a deep understanding of light reflection and refraction properties, essential for high-quality gemstone design. - Mathematical Precision: I meticulously calculated dimensions such as length-to-width (L/W = 1.162) and thickness-to-width (T/W = 0.700) ratios to ensure the gem's proportions align with industry standards for aesthetics and brilliance. - Surface Refinement Techniques: By applying advanced surfacing techniques, I refined the pavilion and crown angles to achieve optimal light performance. For instance, specific angles were set at 90° for pavilion facets (G1 to G7) and varied angles for crown facets (a to j), enhancing the overall visual appeal of the gem. This project not only showcases my proficiency in SOLIDWORKS but also highlights my capability to execute intricate designs that are pivotal in high jewelry. Advanced Surfacing Techniques in CATIA In another publication, I explored advanced surfacing techniques within CATIA's Generative Shape Design Workbench. My focus was on creating complex geometries that are often required in high jewelry design: - Hybrid Modeling Approach: I employed a hybrid modeling technique that combines both solid and surface modeling. This approach allowed me to manipulate individual faces of complex shapes while ensuring structural integrity. - NURBS and B-Spline Utilization: Utilizing Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) enabled me to create smooth, organic shapes essential for intricate jewelry designs. The flexibility of B-Splines facilitated the adjustment of curves and surfaces with high precision. - Surface Continuity and Aesthetics: I prioritized achieving Class A surface quality by focusing on curvature continuity and reflection highlights. This attention to detail is crucial for creating visually stunning pieces that meet the high standards of luxury jewelry brands. By integrating these techniques into my design process, I am well-equipped to contribute effectively to complex projects in high jewelry design, despite my current lack of direct experience in this specific field.
