I installed motion sensor switches on my stairway and needed custom switch plates to direct or limit the sensors ability to pick up movement. I also needed to make sure the manual switch on the sensor could not be inadvertently switched on or off. The holes are thee so you can use a paperclip to access the switch and the programming switch without removing the plate. However, removal is also easy as it just slides into place
