While in the mass accelerator, this spacer prevents the rip pins from attempting to extend while accelerating. That could be bad for the tube of the accelerator device. Once the projectile is clear of the tube, these two spacers will pop out when the projectile comes in contact with the target. (They may even separate if used in a spin stabilizing accelerator tube.
