I needed some PTFE bushings for 8mm smooth rods because I had had enough noise from those tiny recirculating ball bearings, so I went scraping for metal parts to build a small lathe that really handles steel well, the precision is amazing if you take your time to measure three times, tack then weld really slowly, also having a friendly scrapyard guy who supports your insanity to DIY everything helps.
