Project Overview: Semi-Professional DIY VMC for Aluminum and Steel Machining This work-in-progress (WiP) project focuses on the design and construction of a semi-professional, DIY vertical machining center (VMC) tailored for machining aluminum and steel. The machine is being designed with a relatively large working area to accommodate moderately sized engine blocks on the machine table. Additionally, provisions for increased Z-axis lift will allow for the integration of an optional trunnion table, enabling 5-axis machining capabilities. Key Features and Design Highlights: - Base and Column: Constructed from epoxy granite for rigidity and vibration damping. - Motion System: X-Axis: 750W AC Servo motor, 820mm travel. Y-Axis: 750W AC Servo motor, 570mm travel. Z-Axis: 1000W AC Servo motor with brake, 645mm travel, with a pneumatic counterweight. - Rotary Tool Changer: rotary-style automatic tool changer with 24 slots. -Spindle and Tooling: Designed for a BT30 spindle, powered by a ZMYB-380-200L-15-60-5R5-RE2-B35-28J-KN 5,5kW (8000rpm) or equivalent. i1,25 pulley ratio resulting in 10000rpm at the spindle. -5-Axis Potential: Z-axis lift allows for the future addition of a trunnion table for multi-axis machining capabilities. Suggestions, feedback, and collaboration are highly encouraged as I refine the details and optimize the design. Fyi: I had some concerns regarding the long stickout of the arm. I am limited by my tools and knowledge so I aproximated the force on the arm with two relatively high offset forces. Got negligable max displacments on the arm and column in FEA. Status: The machine itself is basically done. Next up is the toolchanger. From now on there will (hopefully) only be small changes to incorporate the toolchanger, enclosure and other assemblies which might need adjustments on the base machine.
