This particular detachment has been made with the assumptions that the drone cannot land, and has to drop the supplies from a high position. Note: All parts were made using Creo Parametric. Support or Balance beams: The beams are the only portion of the attachment that will directly connect with the rest of the drone. It consists of three parts. The first is a solid shaft that fits into the supply pod body. It must be made of a strong and rigid material to carry the load, and must be able to automatically pull back into the central shaft, which is the second part. This part is hollow, and must be made stronger and sturdier than the first shaft. The final part is a movable interface, with wheels or gears on its sides. These will connect to a mechanism inside the rest of the drone, and will help keep the supply pod steady. Support Collar or Ring: The support ring has only one function: to support the beams during the detachment process. Payload: The supply pod is the most important component. It consists of a hollow cylinder, with a dome bottom and a detachable top. The top contains a parachute, which will open when the pod detaches. The pod has been blunt to produce high drag, while also maintaining a level of streamlining. Complete Attachment: The assembly of the above parts can be done through a number of ways, but using fasteners, keys and pins is most desirable since there are various moving parts. This entire attachment will fir into the centre of the drone. Manufacturing processes and Materials: Considering the importance of the pod in the attachment, I believe that producing it from 3-D printing is the best way to reduce its weight. In this way, the thickness of the pod walls can be adjusted according to the contents, and inside compartments can also be easily and simply made. The support ring can be made from a light-weight metal such as Aluminum, through casting and then machining. The balance beams will have to be made in parts, with the inner and middle shaft both casted using a metal such as high-Carbon Steel and Titanium, while the support interface must be an assembly of various parts. In case the drone can land in the disaster area, the supply pod can be fabricated (by 3-D printing) in such a way that the dome top and bottom can be made flat, which will produce a cylinder.
