Dual Frame CubeSat This CubeSat is built using two frames interlocked with one another. The one improving on the qualities of the other to results in an overall lightweight and very strong frame able to withstand the forces and temperatures it will be put under. It is very simple yet effective and efficient for the need that it needs to fulfil. This also allows for a very small part count. The main frame assembly is made up of four main parts which can be 3D printed using additive manufacturing to print the plastic PEI inner frame and laser sintering for the outside titanium frame. The way the frame is designed all parts fit perfectly together and are screwed in place with a minimum amount of screws needed. The design also eliminates circuit board standoffs to keep weight and part count down. The circuit board assemblies slide into the inner frame in is closed in placed by closing the inner frame with 4 screws. Next the outer frame encloses the inner frame and is locked in place by 4 screws. Lastly solar panel or exterior walls can be screwed into place with will also further lock the two frames together and add strength and stiffness to the structure. The outside frame will always stay the same but the inside frame can be changed and designed specifically with your design in mind to accommodate your PC board layout with a simple pattern change in your 3D model. The final step in assembly is the outside solar panels with screw in place and also strengthens the dual frame further by adding joining points and the structure of the solar panel itself will add strength and stiffness to the model. Preliminary FEA studies show that the frame assembly is sufficiently strong under a load of 20G’s applied in each orthogonal axis non-simultaneously. The stresses are really low with a very high safety factor which means that if weight is a problem further weight reduction is possible. Also the maximum displacement due to the force of 20G’s applied was found to be really low, small enough to declared trivial. the natural frequency is also not a concern and all natural frequencies due to the 20G’s force applied is in the range of 400Hz. This being far away from the predicted acoustic octave centre frequencies and also the secondary payload generalized random vibration environment. The materials used are titanium and PEI plastic polymer. The reasons for the selection are as follows: Titanium: Very lightweight and strong, corrosion resistant material. It has a ...
