Extended Area CubeSat Description: A main structure is fitted with 12 moveable panels, which can be used to extend the effective area of the CubeSat. In the beginning the panels are folded inside the CubeSat structure and will be extendable safe and simple with a spring mechanism. What for? This extended CubeSat area can be used to increase the power generation with additional solar panels. Volume for a solar panel on at least one side is already implemented in the design. With this extended area up to 13 1U Solar panels could be used at a single time. Therefore power consuming applications will become feasible for smaller CubeSats. These can be for example high data rate communications, video production, laser communication, electric engine powering, heating experiments and much more. This extended area can also be used for heat conduction from the core of the CubeSat with for example copper foils and the panels can be used as radiators. Furthermore this opened structure is highly advantageous to radiate heat directly from the core into space. Another advantage for an increased area is the option to fit these panels with sensory equipment and conduct experiments in orbit concerning cosmic dust, space debris, charged particles and electromagnetic fields. Specifications: This Submission is complying with existing CubeSat deployment systems, as the dimensions of commercially available outer structure were used. A non-functional dead man switch is also implemented in the current design. The panels decrease the available volume for payload to a volume of: 76 x 76.5 x 88 mm³. For power consuming CubeSat application this should be an acceptable range This structure can be printed in a single printing job and is therefore effectively a single part. Openings are already placed to remove any residual powder from the printing process, to allow the axis of the panels to move freely. This CubeSat is only producible with a 3D printer as the panels are moveable but not separate able from the main structure. To reproduce this design with conventional methods would require a great amount of integration effort and would also increase the required mass of the structure and reduce the payload volume. Therefore 3D printing is the optimal approach for this design. The chosen manufacturing method is DIRECT METAL LASER SINTERING as only metals are considered to be suited to sustain launch loads. As a printing material Aluminum are recommended for...
