This is the external tank and the rocket boosters for an orbiter, which is a space shuttle. The external tank, or ET, is the "gas tank" for the Orbiter; it contains the propellants used by the Space Shuttle Main Engines. It's the backbone of a shuttle launch. IT gives enough support for the shuttle to be carried with the rockets. The rocket boosters provide the power to launch the shuttle out of the atmosphere.
