Finger Orthosis - Thermoformable 3D Printed · 模型 194964
The design of a finger immobilization splint was initially created as a solid plate in CAD. However, adjusting the printing parameters in Cura transformed it into a splint with a tessellated pattern that allows airflow. The device consists of two rectangular sections, one longer than the other, connected by a heat-deformable area to fold the plates. It also features four slots through which an elastic band with a velcro closure is inserted to secure the splint, along with heat-shaped tabs next to each slot to prevent lateral sliding. Initially, a velcro elastic band was used for adjustment, but regular elastic bands, commonly known as money bands, were also implemented. These bands are threaded through the slots and adjusted using a lark’s head knot for a comfortable fit, with the free end wrapping over the tip of the splint to prevent loosening. The design is intended for a medium-sized hand. To adjust the splint’s dimensions, it is recommended to modify the scaling percentage in Cura depending on the axis: X-axis for thinner fingers, Y-axis for longer fingers, and Z-axis to widen the splint or enlarge the elastic slots. The thermoforming process was done with a small gas lighter, ensuring the PLA was not exposed to heat for too long. For added comfort, the edges near the knuckles and palm were softened with a gentle curve to prevent irritation when moving the hand, and the plates were also curved along their length to better fit around the finger. After moulding, two pieces of EVA foam were cut and glued to each plate with hot glue to provide a softer contact with the skin. The Cura printing parameters were set to 15% infill with a Trihexagonal pattern, 0 top and bottom layers, and 4 wall perimeters.
