This preliminary design, by Lauren and Nick, was based on two natural concepts: veins and cobwebs. Veins along each of the petals enable them to extend via inflation and solidify via light-reacting resin. The cobweb pattern enables strengthening via tension provided by springs. Further detail is provided in the description pdf. Whilst we unfortunately did not have time to include the level of detail we would have liked, we hope this submission is enough to demonstrate the ideas, which we hope will be useful in meeting the mass and structural challenges of scaling up the original starshade.
