small differences in the magnetic "reluctance" of the core parts generate small voltages between the ends of the shaft. These small voltages induce currents that jump across ball bearing gaps or break through the oil films on sleeve bearings. This electrical arcing leads to surface damage In order to resolve the issue we have to redirect the direction of electrical current away from the bearings, that is possible by installing a grounded ring that is connected to the shaft using carbon brush
