On old HALDA Speedpilot devices very often the adjusting knobs are missing. Depending on the model of the Speedpilot there are four to six knobs to adjust the different indicators. The Speedpilot was used on old style automobile rallies, wenn the results were based on orientation and average speeds for special stages. The Speedpilot calculated mechanically the adjusted average speed to the actual speed of the car and indicated if the vehicle was too slow or too fast to reach the average speed. HALDA was a swedish manufacurer of typewriters and taxameters and so it was only a little step to built rally timing equipment like the Trip- and Twinmasters (calculating the distance to one metre accuracy) and the Speedpilot.
