My name is Jason Ward, I am an Industrial Design Junior at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design for the course CAID II taught by David Proeber. My “Extreme Redesign” is a set of 3 “Hypercubes”. Hypercubes are 4D shapes that can’t be viewed in 3D. Scientists have made models of hypercubes using computer simulations, a cube where each 2D face is another 3D cube, but each face tangent. They view it by turning it into a wire frame, removing the faces and then viewing the simulation of its shadow. Seeing a hypercube in 3d like this is like viewing a 2D drawing of a cube from the wrong angle, where perspectives are warped. Both are representations of a higher dimensional plane, that has to be interpreted by the viewer. Also I took some artistic liberty with my designs, so that they were more than just wire frames. Therefore, my designs are hypothetical representations of these “wire frame” hypercubes redesigned as aesthetic sculptural objects that can be placed as small artworks around your home or office. I hope they inspire you to think outside the box, as a hypercube is quite literally a box outside of the normal dimensional planes of a 3D box. They are intended to be printed as translucent PLA, and each one fits within the 120.65 x 120.65 x 120.65 mm spacing requirement. The files were slided in Cura for Makerbot, the printers we have at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.
