Endocrine disorders are diseases that affect the body’s ability to regulate or recognize the balance of hormones in the body. Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder and affected over 415 million individuals worldwide in 2018. Our device, M.E.N.D (Modular Endocrine Nano Distributor), is a device capable of treating diabetes by analyzing the concentration of dissolved glucose in the bloodstream and releasing insulin without user input or maintenance. Using recombinant plasmid edited E. Coli bacterium, blood glucose levels are regulated through a negative feedback loop between the concentration of dissolved monosaccharides and E. Coli populations. Additionally, our device takes advantage of elevated glucose levels in diabetic individuals to produce a supply of energy to be self-sufficient. Though designed with the treatment of diabetes in mind, M.E.N.D can be modified to accommodate other diseases and even track and control multiple diseases at once.
