INDIE - a self-deploying lunar sampling system · 模型 268368
Word origin of 'indie': 'independent' + '-ie' INDIE is a self-deploying system which can collect lunar regolith samples without the need of other mechanical systems such as a robot arm. INDIE weighs 485 grams, uses up to 25 watts and can collect regolith samples, sort them based on size and deposit them in layers in the specified container. The system works on the principle of a dragline excavator and consists of a motorized bucket linked to a winch. The bucket uses a motor to swing itself into different orientation to accomplish several tasks: - orients itself at an optimal digging angle - avoids obstacles such as larger rocks - maneuvers around the edge of the lander when being lifted back up - deposits collected regolith The winch deploys the bucket by spinning and then releasing it. The winch can rotate around a vertical axis, increasing sampling area. Dust and small rocks are gathered by the bucket and go through a sieve to the bottom of the device. Larger rocks are retained at the top. As the winch brings the bucket back to the lander, a cam opens a spring-loaded iris mechanism and the device deposits the fine samples. By tilting the bucket at an angle, large rocks are deposited. For multi-experiment missions where a robotic arm is already included, the system can be used as a sample-collecting end-effector weighting 235 grams and using under 10 watts of power (bucket only). But then... it would need a different name. More details are available in README - INDIE.pdf
