Over my professional career of product design, I have faced difficulty in ideating any new novel mechanism. Now we have AI which can help a lot, but before AI, I was able to form my own method. Like, if you want one mechanism to behave in a certain way, find out how it will be possible; in simple terms what changes should happen in components such that that mechanism would be possible. For example, In your professional career as mechanical engineering you must have encountered lead screw mechanism, and one or two cases you might have encountered break down or jamming of lead screw as in case of XY gantry or 3D printers, and you might have had to manually rotate the lead screw to get the nut back to a desired position. In those moments it must have struck you how cool it would be to detach this lead screw nut and freely slide the block attached with lead screw nut at any desired position and attach the lead screw nut back, at your will. Well you have a problem that needs a solution. So the question during ideation would be – Q. what changes in component is required to freely slide the block on guide rods Answer – Simply detach the lead screw nut which means in simple terms ,somehow the lead screw nut loses contact only with the lead screw on the command and comes in contact when desired with a simple mechanism. Mechanism Ideation – If we split the lead screw nut into two halves and use guides and springs to align and using linkage or cam we can detach or detach at our will. I have designed one quick mockup cad for your understanding as well. Please see the picture. Using this framework in ideation has helped me a lot to design some amazing mechanisms.
