I decided to add steps along the helix of a simple spring and see if the effects on stress, strain, FOS etc. The results: The spring section I did FEA on, in which there are steps has 24.84 % less stress, 28.53 % less strain, 33 % more FOS but has 3.45 % more displacement for the same wire and outer diameter and loading conditions.
