By mid 19th century the marine chronometer box was quite standardized in the form of three section wood case. Late 18th and early 19th were often housed in a two section case with sliding and hinged lid and with a different form of locking the gimbals. This case design is based on Thomas Earnshaw chronometer from about 1801. The chronometer itself is an accurate solid model of an exiting one.
