My design is, as known to all brass musicians, a mouthpiece. It is the basic and most important element in a brass instrument. It is in short the airway through which music is produced it is where the musician applies his lips and blows into to play the instrument. Such mouthpieces are used for all the brass instruments from the trumpet to the sousaphone. The way it fits the players mouth, its depth, its shape many other parameters contribute to having a wonderful even magical sound…or in the exact opposite direction a horrible sound. So what makes the perfect mouthpiece? Well as a musician myself, I can with certainty say that every musician will give a completely different answer. I designed this mouthpiece for a baritone- and it actually fits a tenor trombone as well-the two instruments I play. I tried to design it in the way that I would like my mouthpiece to personally be, changing and applying everything I would like to have or not have in my current mouthpiece. My mouthpiece has a slightly smoother inner radius so it fits better on my mouth and doesn’t hurt my lips after many hours of practice. It is of medium as would be called depth and a slightly smaller throat than usual for a baritone. The exterior is simple but is thin enough around the throat to make it easier to hold when needed as the pointer finger locks much more conveniently. In the end of the mouthpiece I have adjusted a very small radius to make the flow of air smoother thus making the sound a little gentler. Mouthpieces are made of brass, conventionally in lathes quite quickly and efficiently. So why 3D print it? Well, for starters it’s cool… But once we pass that small detail, 3D printing a “tool”, which is what it is for musicians, will allow it to be more customizable to the needs of every musician which is very important. It could also be made to fit more instruments or custom made instruments that often require custom made mouthpieces to fit them. Although the main design and shape is practically the same and can’t really change that much, the inner form of the mouthpiece can be altered. 3D printing them makes it easy to test them make features that might not have been able to be made on a lathe. This will be a “revolution” in the musical instrument industry which although to all seems conventional and has nothing to do with engineering, can become a industry where 3D Printing thrives as well as science.
