---> NASA CHALLENGE 2020 <--- NASA RASSOR DRUM - 2 spirals · 模型 237860
This is my seconds entry of the NASA RASSOR Challenge. 2-scoops design with spiral structure of the drum internal space with intended fill ratio over 70% (over 35 liters). The spiral structure allows 2 aspects of main function: to direct the collected regolith deep into the drum, reducing the resistance to collecting of new portions of regolith at entry area to unload regolith due to reverse rotation at the unloading point evenly, which reduces the chance of regolith jam and sticking In 2-scoops design the scoops are intentionally shifted more to one side of a drum. Let’s look at the drum along the axis, so the figure section is a circle. We’ll see the scoops are unevenly distributed around the circle i.e. at 1, 2, 3…, 12 o’clock as normally in 3 scoops designs, but grouped more to one side, i.e. at approx. 7, 9, 11, 13 o’clock. The excavation cycle ends with the scoops being in the upper left position. In this position of scoops the drum loses less regolith when the bugger is moving. Hence, 2-scoops design has both advantages and disadvantages compared with a “classic” 3 scoops design. Disadvantage is that the excavation is done less evenly and most likely takes longer compared to the symmetrical 3-scoops designs. Advantage is that during transportation less regolith is going to be lost due to spillage. We can’t make exact estimations and number comparison of advantages and disadvantages as they need more complex modelling and testing. But it is obvious that the 3-scoops design is more likely to win if a typical excavation site is near the processing site. And the farther a typical excavation site is from a processing site, the greater the advantage of 2-scoops design over 3-scoops design should be. In this model 2 scoops have an angle of 55° between them to meet the requirement of max. 175 mm scoop width engaged at any time. But if this requirement limit can be reduced, the effect of lesser scattering during the transportation can be more essential. Material of a drum is mostly carbon fiber because of a weight limit (calculation link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ee9JULr8QjGDX7upZeuKtGVvxd2IF4I9Nd5RXKK6HgI/edit?usp=sharing), with antifriction alloys used for scoops. The 3D Model was created in Blender v. 2.79b + 2.81, the simulation of regolith grain excavation was created in Houdini v.18. Maximum total width of scoops engaged at any given time is less than 175 mm.
