This concept uses several plates of aluminum alloy joined with ABS hinges. All the components are bonded, no separate parts. The plates can be cutted with laser, water or machined, and have some sides bent to reinforce it. When the structure is unfolded the plates fit together and the hinges have protrusions to reinforce the joints. Mounting plate needs 6 holes type keyhole to fix the structure. A hexagonal key is necessary to screw it. The union screws have circlips to prevent separation. The union with the rack union is very fast, only need to turn the levers in each 4 arms 90º. Dimensions when folded: 21,2 in x 9 in x 3,66 in Total weight: 7,28 lb (3,3 kg) 2016_09_04: attached STEP review file and new STEP in folded position. Why hinges 3D printed? - In early versions of design I started using commercial hinges, but did not provide me the necessary geometry , so I chose to use hinges designed and printed. - This option gives me freedom of design, providing the possibility of introducing elements that reinforce the bond between the aluminum plates. - Allows the manufacture of spare parts directly in space (hopefully not needed). - Have accommodation for nuts. This facilitates assembly because it is not necessary to hold them when the screw is inserted. It also allows secure them previously by adhesive or melting plastic. Optionally allows the use of self-locking nuts. - The hinges have very small volume of printing and a small amount of plastic. The support has been designed on the premise of less variety of parts possible. Why the use of aluminum bent sheet? - The reason for using aluminum metal sheets is due to the low cost of this material. - Allows faster, flexible and inexpensive manufacture possible using laser, waterjet cutting or machining. - Enables use of complex forms and optimize weight without increasing manufacturing costs. - Sharp edges can be smoothed easily. Considerations: Tempered aluminum sheet bending involves a heat treatment to prevent the material cracking. If this reason involves problems of certification, similar to the welded elements, the choice is to use thicker aluminum plate and machining the plates, lowering its inside. This process is more expensive because need more working hours of machine and CNC programming, but have the counterpart to reduce the number of parts of the design (removing the mounting screws and existing reinforcement plates) and almost certainly can say that the weight assembly wil...
