When reviewing the specification for operation at temperatures as low as 20 Kelvin, I immediately knew that a spring would not be functional due to the material’s crystallization at such low temperatures. At cryogenic temperatures, springs lose their elasticity and become brittle, making them ineffective. For this reason, I began thinking about solutions that didn’t rely on springs, and this is the design I arrived at. The spiral grooves I incorporated proved to be a simple yet effective solution for fluid sealing, combined with PTFE seals. Additionally, one of my main objectives was to design a highly robust system capable of withstanding the significant mechanical loads that the cones will have to endure. As I refined the design, I focused on making it more durable and resilient to ensure it can handle operational demands.
