This coupling is designed to fit with the exact same built connector units. Therefore you don't have to think about male or female connector. The connector units should be pressed together and twisted for 180°. On a 90° per unit the lock pin is pushed up by the green cicrled ramp. If the pin is pushed up, the fluidstream is activated. The turn also shears off the main fluid stream and seals the output/input hole.
