Oriental Pearl Tower · 模型 272864
Currently, it is not uncommon for blind or visually impaired children to be self-conscious of their own disabilities. In schools, these children feel detached from their fellow classmates because they fear being bullied for their visual disadvantages. To solve this issue, I remodeled the white cane commonly used by the blind to be able to reconfigure itself and resemble the Oriental Pearl Tower located in Shanghai, China. In this way, visually impaired or blind students can feel comfortable exhibiting their visual disabilities. The newly reconfigured white cane can attract other classmates’ interests, thus serving as a gateway of conversation between the visually impaired or blind student and his/her new acquaintances. In this way, the redesigned white cane is an effective way for strengthening and reinforcing the self-esteem of those with visual disadvantages. While it cannot be guaranteed that the reconfigured white cane will completely boost the confidence of these students, my design also has another purpose: to spark architectural and cultural interests for all students. By having the capability of morphing into the Oriental Pearl Tower, students may be inspired to construct their own innovations. This is incredibly beneficial to society because the design has the ability to encourage the interests of potential architects, inventors, and innovators. Additionally, students may wish to learn about the Chinese culture. This stimulates learning and ultimately reinforces the popular moral of tolerance for cultural diversity. In essence, my remodeling of the white cane is a unique innovation that serves to not only aid the visually impaired or blind, but also to promote learning and innovation for the present and the future.
