In chess, a pawn is the least powerful piece but also the most numerous, with each player starting with eight. Pawns move one square forward on each turn, except on their first move where they can choose to move one or two squares. They capture diagonally forward one square. When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to any other chess piece (except the king).
