It is no secret, there are plenty of sunglass clips and holders to choose from out on the market. All ranging in price and functionality. However, there seems to be one common design flaw amongst all of them. When one goes to unclip the sunglasses from the holder on the visor, one has to use two hands in order to take them down. Otherwise the sunglasses would just plummet from their perch. When one uses two hands to fetch their sunglasses, that means there are zero hands on the steering wheel, which is very problematic. In fact, the Department of Transportation states that ten percent of all crashes are due to the driver being distracted. This design allows grabbing sunglasses to be a one handed operation, leaving for the drivers attention to be where it is needed, the road. This product was prototyped utilizing FDM 3-D printing which is an additive manufacturing technique. It is known also as fused deposition modeling which means layers of plastic are laid down to create the final product. The prototypes were made with PLA plastics. This also allows for less waste to be made in the process of constructing the model. It also enables for more complex geometry to be made with much greater precision. For example, the technology it uses to clasp together is very hard to make using traditional manufacturing techniques. The impact of this design is that it becomes more convenient to store one’s sunglasses and less daunting of a task. This can keep both the driver and others safe on the roads. Grabbing one’s sunglasses should not be a 5 step operation, and this design changes that.
