CFD Simulation Analysis of a 45° Elbow Pipe Based on the CFD Flow Simulation results for a 45° elbow pipe, which displays the volume fraction of water (VFW) and volume fraction of air (VFW), the following analysis can be performed: 1. Water Volume Fraction Distribution In the first image, red to brown colors indicate a high water volume fraction (approaching 1), while blue colors indicate a low water volume fraction. Water is concentrated at the bottom of the horizontal pipe and begins to experience a change in distribution as it passes through the 45° bend. In the elbow area, mixing and a change in flow direction occur, resulting in an uneven water surface. After passing through the elbow, the water fraction decreases further at the top of the inclined pipe because some of the space is occupied by air. 2. Air Volume Fraction Distribution The second image shows the opposite distribution of water. Red colors indicate a high air volume fraction, while blue colors indicate a low air fraction. Air dominates the upper part of the pipe, especially after passing through the elbow. When the flow bends, air tends to move upward due to the difference in density between the water and the air. This indicates phase separation between air and air during the flow process. 3. Effect of a 45° Elbow A 45° bend causes a change in fluid velocity direction, resulting in a non-uniform pressure and velocity distribution. Turbulence increases in the elbow area due to changes in flow momentum. This turbulence causes greater mixing between the air and water phases than in a straight pipe. Furthermore, energy loss (head loss) occurs, indicated by a change in fluid distribution pattern after passing through the bend. 4. Flow Characteristics The visible contours show a transition to turbulence in the elbow area. In the straight pipe before the bend, the phase distribution is relatively stable and tends to be more laminar. However, after entering the elbow, a more complex color gradient indicates the presence of local eddies and more intense fluid mixing. Conclusion CFD simulation of a 45° elbow pipe shows that the pipe bend significantly affects the air and water phase distribution. Water tends to flow at the bottom of the pipe, while air dominates at the top. The elbow area is the primary location for turbulence, phase mixing, and energy loss due to changes in flow direction. Overall, the 45° elbow design still allows good fluid flow, but it produces greater flow disturban
