Most dynamic athletic activities require the planar flexion of the ankle joint. This support helps in both energy return and impact resistance of the foot by resisting the instantaneous dorsal flexion of the calf muscle. The sleeve is formed by 3 pieces of lightweight rigid material (partly elastic or with a layer or deformable material within to hold foot well) at the balls of the feet, heel cup and above the ankle. A rubber connection between these pieces produces a force to enforce constant planar flexion of the foot. The rest of the sleeve is sewn with any stretchable cloth.
