This is the alternate style of bicycle tire air valve called a "Presta Valve" as opposed to the "Schrader Valve." It is used to provide compressed air to the inside of the bicycle tire or tube, on rims which have the proper valve cutout. This particular valve is used with a "tubeless" setup. A tubeless setup is one in which the bicycle tire does not use an inner-tube to hold the air. Instead, the valve's gasket forms an air tight seal with the rim and the compressed air inflates the bicycle tire itself.
