A 3D-printable shock absorber that I designed in SolidWorks for a fully 3D-printed RC car pet project that I am working on. The design uses a compression spring that I got from my local hardware store, and it has an approximate free length of 38 mm, 1 mm wire diameter, 12.5 mm outer diameter and 10.5 mm inner diameter. The spring has a fully compressed length of approximately 11 mm, meaning that there is 27 mm of available travel. The shock absorber has an 84 mm eye-to-eye length, and a 27 mm stroke. It uses the full available travel of the spring while preventing it from binding. The current design is a proof-of-concept and does not incorporate oil damping, meaning that it essentially is an undamped spring. It performs well enough for the time being and is good enough for me to move onto the next step, which is to design a double wishbone suspension system onto all four wheels for the RC car. I may revisit this design and add damping to it in the future, depending on how the development progresses.
