Our team at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, undertook an ambitious project titled "Rotational Kinetic Energy Storage Device for Robots" for our MIE 415S Senior Capstone Design. Our mission was to enhance the efficiency of robotic systems, particularly robotic dogs, by innovating how they store and use energy. Our designed device innovatively captures excess energy from a robot's motor during low-demand phases and strategically releases it to provide a power boost when required. This advanced mechanism is capable of augmenting the motor's instantaneous power output by as much as 150%. Furthermore, it significantly enhances the overall energy optimization of the mechanical system, particularly the actuator system, achieving an efficiency of approximately 85%. This is accomplished while utilizing the same actuators currently employed in the robots. To facilitate this efficient energy storage and release, we incorporated spiral springs, chosen for their effectiveness and reliability in energy management. Our design process, closely aligned with customer needs as per our House of Quality analysis, evolved through iterative stages, resulting in versatile models like the 'one-stage slingshot' mechanism. We overcame challenges such as friction and mechanical losses by applying our engineering expertise, leading to effective prototypes and CAD models. Our performance evaluation prioritized power boost, efficiency, size, and weight, focusing on practical robotic applications. This project not only earned academic acclaim but also marks a substantial advancement in robotic technology with its innovative approach
