An old woodworking tool used to hold a workpiece in place while it is being machined with a cutting tool. A planing bench consists of a bench on which the carpenter sits; a pedal-operated clamp that holds the workpiece in place; and legs to support the shaving horse while it is being shaved. The pedal-operated portion of the clamp consists of a platform (to support the workpiece while it is being shaved) and a swing arm (pushed by the carpenter's feet to hold the workpiece firmly against the platform).
